125mm Braked Castor – Maroon Polyurethane Wheel, Large 140 x 110mm Plate, 300kg

For trolleys, machinery and equipment that carry real weight and must then stay firmly in place, this 125mm braked castor pairs a compact wheel with a large 140 x 110mm plate and a wider 40mm tyre for a 300kg rating. It has a maroon polyurethane tyre bonded to a white polyamide (nylon) centre, running on a roller bearing, with a zinc-plated pressed steel housing, a 140 x 110mm top plate and a foot-operated total lock brake that holds both the wheel and the swivel head. Each castor is rated to 300kg and stands 165mm tall. It suits workshop and warehouse trolleys, machine stands, factory and production equipment, and heavily loaded platform trucks.

Why it works

Polyurethane tyre – high load, easy rolling

The maroon polyurethane tyre is bonded to a white polyamide (nylon) centre, so it cannot shear off or creep round the hub under load. Polyurethane is much harder wearing than rubber and, at 95 Shore A, it is firm enough to give low rolling resistance while taking the edge off small bumps, so heavy loads start and keep moving with less effort. It resists oils, greases and most workshop fluids, and copes with temperatures from -40°C to +80°C. The trade-off is a firmer ride than rubber: on rough or broken floors it transmits more vibration and noise, so it is at its best on smooth concrete, resin, vinyl and tiles.

Roller bearing for easier rolling

The wheel runs on a roller bearing rather than a plain bore, so it takes less effort to start and keep moving under load, and it wears more evenly over time.

Total lock brake – wheel and swivel held together

A standard wheel brake stops the wheel rolling but still lets the castor spin round. This castor's foot brake locks the wheel and the swivel head at the same time, so equipment stays exactly where you park it.

Where it's used

Workshop and warehouse trolleys, machine and equipment stands, production-line and factory trolleys, tool cabinets and platform trucks. Best on smooth concrete, resin, vinyl and tiled floors; on rough or broken surfaces a rubber tyre gives a quieter, softer ride.

Choosing the right option

This is the large-plate version of our 125mm maroon polyurethane braked castor: its bigger M10 plate and wider tyre take 300kg, against 250kg for the standard 105 x 85mm plate version. Choose polyurethane, as here, for the highest load at a given wheel size and the easiest rolling on smooth floors; choose rubber or TPR where a softer, quieter ride over rough floors matters more. Check you have a flat area at least 140 x 110mm under each corner for the plate. For brakes, most equipment has total lock castors on two corners and plain swivel castors of the same size on the other two. For the load, add up the weight of the item and everything on it and divide by three rather than four, because on an uneven floor one castor is often lifted; if the answer is over 300kg, choose a larger wheel or a heavy-duty castor. Allow 148mm of swivel clearance around each castor.

Installation, use and care

Hold the plate flat against the base and fix it through all four holes with M10 bolts and nuts. Fixings are not included. Fit the castor so the brake pedal faces outwards where your foot can reach it. Check the fixings after the first few weeks, keep the wheel and brake clear of threads and debris, and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Bring equipment to rest before applying the brake.

Frequently asked questions

Is polyurethane better than rubber?
For heavy loads on smooth floors, yes: it carries more, rolls more easily and wears longer. On rough or uneven floors rubber gives a quieter, more cushioned ride.

Will oil or grease damage the tyre?
No. Polyurethane resists oils, greases and most workshop fluids, which is why it is widely used in workshops and factories.

What does "total lock" mean?
The foot brake locks both the wheel and the swivel head, so the castor can neither roll nor spin round.

What size bolts do I need?
The plate holes are 10mm, so use M10 bolts and nuts. Fixings are not supplied.
