Why buy from a castor specialist?

General suppliers stock a handful of castors. We stock the whole problem: every size, load, wheel, fixing and brake in one place, plus people who can tell them apart.

The right castor, first time

A castor that is under-rated, too hard for the floor or the wrong fixing costs you twice: once to buy and again to replace. Every product page shows the load per castor, plate and hole centres, overall height and swivel radius so you can check fit before you order.

Depth, not a token range

From 25mm bolt hole castors to 525mm super-elastic wheels, stainless steel for washdown, anti-static for electronics and heat-resistant for ovens and bakeries, the specialist variants are stocked alongside the everyday ones.

Straight answers from people

Not sure what you have? Send a photo of the old castor on WhatsApp or tell us the load, floor and fixing, and we will match it or recommend a better option.

How we specify a castor

Load, floor and fixing are the start. These are the questions we ask next, and the ones that separate a castor that lasts from one that fails early.

01

Environment

Standard rubber and polyurethane treads are typically rated to +60°C to +80°C. For ovens and bakeries, choose phenolic (up to around +280°C on some models) or high-temperature cast iron. Washdown areas call for stainless steel. Electronics and flammable atmospheres may need conductive or anti-static wheels. Every product page lists its temperature range.

02

Speed and towing

General industrial castors are rated for use up to walking pace, 4 km/h (ISO 22883). If a trolley is towed, runs in a tugger train or moves faster than walking pace, it needs castors rated for that duty (ISO 22884 covers up to 16 km/h), so tell us before you order.

03

Brakes and locks

A wheel brake stops the wheel turning. A total-lock brake stops both the wheel and the swivel, so the castor cannot rotate. A directional lock holds a swivel castor straight for long runs, then releases it for steering.

04

Bearings

Plain bore is simple and cheap for light, slow use. Roller bearings suit heavier loads. Ball and precision ball bearings roll with the least effort and suit long distances or frequent moves.

05

Tread hardness

Hardness is measured on the Shore scale. Softer treads (lower Shore A) grip, cushion and protect floors; harder treads roll more easily under heavy loads. We list tread hardness where the manufacturer publishes it.

06

Clearance and height

Check the overall height from floor to fixing and the swivel radius, the circle a swivel castor sweeps as it turns. Too little clearance and castors clash with the frame or each other.

Castor standards, explained

When a manufacturer quotes a load rating, it was tested against a standard. Knowing which one tells you what that rating means in practice. The international ISO series below covers castors and wheels, and runs alongside the European EN 12526 to EN 12533 series, published in the UK as BS EN.

ISO 22877Vocabulary, symbols and multilingual terms for castors and wheels
ISO 22878Test methods and apparatus used to rate castors and wheels
ISO 22879Castors for furniture
ISO 22880Castors for swivel chairs
ISO 22881Castors for manually propelled institutional equipment
ISO 22882Castors for hospital beds
ISO 22883Castors for industrial applications up to 1.1 m/s (4 km/h)
ISO 22884Castors for industrial applications over 1.1 m/s and up to 4.4 m/s (16 km/h)

Why it matters: a load rating assumes the conditions in the standard, including speed. A castor rated for 4 km/h hand-pushed use is not rated for towing. We show each manufacturer's rated load per castor on every product page and can advise on which rating applies to your use.

Castor glossary

The terms you will see on our product pages, in plain English.

Swivel castor
A castor that rotates a full 360° around its swivel bearing, so the equipment can be steered.
Fixed (rigid) castor
A castor whose wheel runs in one direction only. Paired with swivel castors, it keeps long loads tracking straight.
Top plate
The flat mounting plate that bolts or screws to the equipment, specified by its length, width and hole centres.
Bolt hole fitting
A single central hole for a bolt or threaded stem, used on tube frames, furniture and anywhere without room for a plate.
Hole centres
The distance between the centres of the fixing holes, measured along the length and across the width of a top plate.
Overall height
The distance from the floor to the fixing surface of the castor. It decides the finished height of your equipment.
Swivel radius
The horizontal distance from the swivel axis to the furthest edge of the wheel: the clearance a castor needs to turn freely.
Offset
The horizontal distance between the swivel axis and the wheel axle. It makes a swivel castor trail behind and follow the direction of travel.
Load capacity
The maximum load one castor is rated to carry, under the conditions of the standard it was tested to.
Tread
The outer running surface of the wheel. Its material and hardness decide grip, noise, floor protection and rolling effort.
Shore A
The hardness scale for rubber and elastomer treads. Higher numbers are harder: easier to roll, less cushioning.
Total-lock brake
A brake that locks both the wheel and the swivel, so the castor can neither roll nor rotate.
Directional lock
A lock that holds a swivel castor in the straight-ahead position, then releases it again for steering.
Super-elastic tyre
A thick solid rubber tyre on a metal centre. It cushions heavy loads over uneven floors without the risk of punctures.
