What is the difference between a directional brake and a total lock brake?
A directional brake stops the wheel from rotating but allows the swivel head to continue turning freely. This means the castor can still pivot and align with the direction of travel, but the equipment will not roll away unintentionally. A total lock brake immobilises both the wheel and the swivel head completely, preventing all movement. For applications where you need to hold position without fully fixing the equipment in place, a directional brake is the preferred choice.
Is this castor suitable for use on hard floors such as concrete or vinyl?
Yes. The blue rubber tread at 75 Shore A hardness is well suited to smooth hard floors including concrete, vinyl, ceramic tile, and epoxy-coated surfaces. The rubber compound provides adequate grip and floor protection without marking or scuffing. It is not recommended for heavily uneven or outdoor terrain where a harder, larger-diameter wheel would be more appropriate.
How do I know if this top plate will fit my existing equipment?
The top plate measures 100mm (length) x 85mm (width) with a 4-bolt-hole pattern. The hole centres span 60mm or 80mm in width, and each hole has a 10mm diameter. Before ordering, measure the existing castor plate or the mounting points on your equipment and compare against these dimensions. This is a widely used standard plate size compatible with most commercial trolleys, carts, and shelving frames.
What is the maximum load if I fit four of these castors to one piece of equipment?
Each castor is individually rated to 120kg. However, the combined set-of-4 rating is 360kg rather than 480kg. This accounts for real-world conditions where weight distribution across four castors is rarely perfectly equal — uneven floors, dynamic loading, and off-centre loads mean one or two castors may bear a disproportionate share of the total weight. Always work within the 360kg set rating to maintain a safe operating margin.
