For trolleys, furniture and equipment that must roll quietly, protect the floor and then stay firmly in place, this 80mm braked castor is a hard-wearing, economical choice. It has a grey thermoplastic rubber (TPR) tyre bonded to a grey polypropylene centre, running on a roller bearing, with a zinc-plated pressed steel housing, a 105 x 85mm top plate and a foot-operated total lock brake that holds both the wheel and the swivel head. Each castor is rated to 80kg and stands 108mm tall. It suits shop and stockroom trolleys, catering and cleaning trolleys, office and school furniture, workbenches and mobile display units.
Why it works
Bonded TPR tyre – non-marking and hard-wearing
Thermoplastic rubber is a grey, non-marking tyre material, so it will not leave the dark scuffs that black rubber can. Because the tyre is bonded to the wheel centre rather than stretched on, it cannot shear off or creep round the hub under load, and it takes higher loads than a standard grey rubber tyre of the same size. The tread (hardness 88 Shore A) is firmer than soft rubber, so it rolls easily while still running quietly on hard floors. It copes with temperatures from -20°C to +60°C.
Roller bearing for easier rolling
The wheel runs on a roller bearing rather than a plain bore, so it takes less effort to start and keep moving under load, and it wears more evenly over time.
Total lock brake – wheel and swivel held together
A standard wheel brake stops the wheel rolling but still lets the castor spin round. This castor's foot brake locks the wheel and the swivel head at the same time, so equipment stays exactly where you park it.

Where it's used
Shop display units and stockroom trolleys, catering and cleaning trolleys, office pedestals and storage units, school and library trolleys, workbenches and light equipment stands. Suited to vinyl, tiles, laminate, sealed wood, sealed concrete and other hard indoor floors where marking is not acceptable.
Choosing the right option
Choose TPR, as here, for a non-marking wheel that is tougher and carries more than standard grey rubber; choose the blue elastic rubber range for the softest, quietest ride, and polyurethane for heavier industrial use. Check you have a flat area at least 105 x 85mm under each corner for the plate. For brakes, most equipment has total lock castors on two corners and plain swivel castors of the same size on the other two. For the load, add up the weight of the item and everything on it and divide by three rather than four, because on an uneven floor one castor is often lifted; if the answer is over 80kg, choose a larger wheel. Allow 118mm of swivel clearance around each castor.
Installation, use and care
Hold the plate flat against the base and fix it through all four holes with M8 bolts and nuts. Fixings are not included. Fit the castor so the brake pedal faces outwards where your foot can reach it. Check the fixings after the first few weeks, keep the wheel and brake clear of threads and debris, and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Keep the tyre away from oils and solvents, and out of temperatures above 60°C. Bring equipment to rest before applying the brake.

Will the grey wheel mark my floor?
No. Thermoplastic rubber is a non-marking compound, so it will not leave the dark scuffs black rubber can. Keep the tyre clean to avoid carrying grit.
What is the difference between TPR and ordinary rubber?
The TPR tyre is bonded to the wheel centre, so it cannot shear off, and it is firmer and more hard-wearing than a standard grey rubber tyre while still running quietly.
What does "total lock" mean?
The foot brake locks both the wheel and the swivel head, so the castor can neither roll nor spin round.
