For trolleys that need to steer freely in tight spaces but also run dead straight down long corridors and aisles, this 200mm directional lock castor gives you both in one. It is a swivel top plate castor with a foot-operated catch that locks the swivel head in the straight-ahead position, turning it into a fixed castor until you release it. It has a blue non-marking elastic rubber tyre on a black polypropylene centre running on a roller bearing, a zinc-plated pressed steel housing and a 140 x 110mm top plate. Each castor is rated to 400kg and stands 240mm tall.
Why it works
Directional lock – swivel or straight at the flick of a foot
With the catch released the castor swivels a full 360 degrees like any swivel castor, so the trolley turns easily in lifts, doorways and bays. Engage the catch and the swivel head is held straight, so the trolley tracks true over long runs without the front wandering. The directional lock holds the swivel head only; the wheel still rolls. It is not a parking brake – choose a total lock castor where the trolley must be held still.
Blue non-marking elastic rubber tyre
The blue elastic rubber tyre is designed not to leave marks on floors, so it is widely used on hospital, laboratory, retail and food-area floors. The tread (hardness A70) absorbs bumps, grips well and runs quietly, and it copes with temperatures from -20°C to +80°C.
Roller bearing for easier rolling
The large wheel runs on a roller bearing rather than a plain bore, so a loaded trolley takes less effort to start and keep moving, and the wheel wears more evenly over time.

Where it's used
Long hospital and care home trolleys, linen and meal-delivery trolleys, laboratory and pharmaceutical carts, catering and food-service trolleys, and warehouse and distribution trolleys that travel long straight routes and then manoeuvre in tight spaces. Suited to vinyl, tiles, sealed concrete, resin and other hard indoor floors where marking is not acceptable.
Choosing the right option
A common layout is one or two directional lock castors at the front, fixed or swivel castors at the back, and total lock castors wherever the trolley must be parked. Fitting one directional lock castor on the front corner you steer from is often enough; engage it for straight runs and release it for cornering. This castor matches the 200mm blue non-marking swivel, total lock and fixed castors in height, so any mix sits level. Check you have a flat area at least 140 x 110mm under each corner and allow 157mm of swivel clearance. For the load, add up the weight of the item and everything on it and divide by three rather than four; if the answer is over 400kg, choose a heavy-duty castor.
Installation, use and care
Hold the plate flat against the base and fix it through all four holes with M10 bolts and nuts. Fixings are not included. Fit the castor so the lock catch faces outwards where your foot can reach it. To lock, push the trolley a short way so the wheel trails straight, then engage the catch. Check the fixings after the first few weeks, keep the wheel and catch clear of threads and debris, and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Keep the rubber tyre away from oils and solvents.
Frequently asked questions
Is a directional lock the same as a brake?
No. It stops the castor swivelling but the wheel still rolls, so the trolley runs straight. To stop a trolley rolling, use total lock or braked castors.
How many do I need on a trolley?
Usually one or two at the front. One on the front corner you steer from is enough for most trolleys.
Will the blue wheel mark my floor?
No. The blue elastic rubber tyre is a non-marking compound, chosen for hospital, laboratory and retail floors.
What size bolts do I need?
The plate holes are 10mm, so use M10 bolts and nuts. Fixings are not supplied.
