For compact cabinets, stands and trolleys with a flat base that must roll easily and then stay completely still, this 50mm twin wheel braked castor is a practical choice. One press of the foot pedal locks both the wheels and the swivel head. It has a 60 x 60mm top plate that screws or bolts to the underside of your equipment, two black polypropylene wheels and a zinc-plated pressed steel housing. Each castor is rated to 60kg and stands only 72mm tall, keeping equipment low and stable. It suits office pedestals, mobile storage, shop display units, light trolleys and school or home furniture.
Why it works
Total lock brake – wheels and swivel held together
A standard wheel brake stops the wheel rolling but still lets the castor spin round, so equipment can shuffle sideways when it is leaned on. This castor's foot-operated brake locks the wheels and the swivel head at the same time. Press the grey pedal to lock and lift it to release; you never need to bend down.
Top plate fixing
The square 60 x 60mm plate has four slotted 6mm holes on 48mm and 37mm centres, so it lines up with more than one bolt pattern and suits M6 bolts, or screws into solid timber or board.
Two small polypropylene wheels
The two 50mm wheels turn independently as the castor swivels, so it changes direction easily with less scrubbing than a single wide wheel. Polypropylene is hard wearing, rolls easily and does not absorb water, which suits floors that are regularly mopped.

Where it's used
Office drawer pedestals and mobile cabinets, shop display units and fixtures, light stock and tool trolleys, workbenches, school and home furniture, and small equipment stands with a flat base. Best on smooth, hard indoor floors such as vinyl, tiles, sealed concrete and laminate.
Choosing the right option
Check the fixing first: you need a flat area at least 60 x 60mm under each corner. If your equipment has tube legs with threaded inserts instead, the 50mm twin wheel braked bolt hole castor is easier to fit. For brakes, most equipment has total lock castors on two corners and plain swivel castors on the other two; the matching unbraked 50mm twin wheel top plate castor is the same 72mm height, so a mixed set sits level. For the load, add up the weight of the item and everything in it and divide by three rather than four, because on an uneven floor one castor is often lifted; if the answer is over 60kg, step up to a 75mm castor. Hard polypropylene wheels roll easily but are firmer and noisier than rubber, so choose grey rubber wheels for quiet running or delicate floors. Allow 84mm of swivel clearance around each castor.
Installation, use and care
Hold the plate flat against the base and fix it through all four slotted holes with M6 bolts and nuts, or suitable screws into solid timber. Fixings are not included. Fit the castor so the pedal faces outwards where your foot can reach it. Check the fixings after the first few weeks, keep the wheels and brake clear of threads and debris, and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Bring equipment to rest before applying the brake.
Frequently asked questions
What does "total lock" mean?
The foot brake locks both the wheels and the swivel head, so the castor can neither roll nor spin round. Equipment stays put even when it is leaned on or worked at.
What size bolts or screws do I need?
The plate holes are 6mm, so use M6 bolts, or screws of a similar size into solid timber. Fixings are not supplied.
Are the wheels rubber?
No. Both wheels are solid black polypropylene, which is hard wearing and easy rolling but firmer than rubber.
What is the load capacity?
Each castor is rated to 60kg. A set of four is rated to 180kg, because the load is calculated on three castors to allow for uneven floors.
