200mm Fixed Pneumatic Castor, Black Tyre on Pressed Steel Centre, 75kg

If you are building or repairing a trolley, cart or mobile base that has to cross gravel, grass, cobbles or broken tarmac, a hard wheel will fight you every metre. This 200mm fixed castor pairs a pressed steel top-plate fork with an air-filled rubber tyre on a pressed steel wheel centre, so the load rides on a cushion of air rather than being jolted over every stone. It is a fixed (non-swivel) castor: it runs in a straight line and is normally fitted in pairs at one end of a trolley, with swivel castors at the other end for steering. Rated at 75kg per castor, it suits farm, garden, builders' yard and workshop equipment that is pushed by hand.

An air-filled tyre for rough ground

A pneumatic tyre deforms around small obstacles instead of bouncing off them. On loose or uneven surfaces that means less effort to push, less noise and far less shock passed into the frame and the load. That is why pneumatic wheels are chosen for sensitive loads and outdoor work.

A fixed fork that keeps you tracking straight

Because the fork cannot swivel, two of these at the rear of a trolley hold it on a straight line while the swivel castors at the front do the steering. That makes a long or heavily loaded trolley much easier to control on a slope or across a rutted yard.

Choosing the right option

Work out the total weight of the trolley plus its heaviest load, then divide by the number of castors that will realistically be carrying it. On uneven ground one wheel is often off the floor, so a sensible rule is to size on three castors rather than four: three of these give 225kg of rated capacity. If your load is heavier, choose a castor with a higher rating rather than overloading this one. Fit two fixed castors at the pushing end or the rear and two matching 200mm swivel castors at the other end so the trolley steers; four fixed castors will only run in a straight line. Check that the 140 x 110mm plate and 105 x 80mm hole pattern fit your frame, and allow for the 240mm overall height when setting the deck height. If punctures are a concern, for example on sites with nails or thorn cuttings, a puncture-proof tyre is the better choice.

Installation, use and care

Bolt through all four holes with M10 bolts, washers and nyloc nuts onto a flat, rigid mounting face. Align both fixed castors so the wheels run parallel, otherwise the trolley will scrub and pull to one side. The tyre is supplied uninflated: inflate it with a standard tyre pump before use and check the pressure periodically, as with any pneumatic tyre. Keep the load within the rating, and inspect the tyre for cuts and the fixings for tightness from time to time.

Does this castor swivel?

No. It is a fixed castor that rolls in a straight line only. For a steerable trolley, fit a pair of these at one end and a pair of the matching 200mm swivel pneumatic castor at the other.

Is the tyre inflated when it arrives?

No, it is supplied uninflated and needs pumping up before use. The manufacturer does not publish a recommended pressure for this line, so inflate firmly and check that the tyre does not bottom out under your load.

What bolts do I need?

The top plate has four 10mm holes on 105 x 80mm centres, which suits M10 bolts. Use washers and nyloc nuts, or bolts into tapped holes, so the fixings cannot work loose with vibration.

How much weight will four of these carry?

Each castor is rated at 75kg. Because one wheel may lift on uneven ground, plan on three castors sharing the load, which gives 225kg. Do not assume the full 300kg from four.
